Pre-K - Grade 5 Summer Reading Club

"Design" Your Own Summer Reading Program!

PICK A READING GOAL

Suggestions:

  • Read 5 days in a row
  • Read 10 minutes a day
  • Read a new author
  • Read in 3 new locations

You can use one of these or come up with your own!

PICK A LEARNING GOAL

Suggestions:

  • Learn how to make a balloon animal
  • Learn how a kite works
  • Learn the names of the constellations
  • Learn how to knit

PICK A COMMUNITY GOAL

Suggestions:

  • Go for a walk and pick up trash along the way
  • Have a garage sale or lemonade stand for your favorite cause
  • Listen to a concert in the park in Grafton
  • Write a "thank you" letter to a soldier.  (Drop it off at the library and we'll mail it for you.)

Meet your 3 chosen goals as well as reading 5 books, and you can get 15 tickets to use for a chance to win prizes!  Don't forget, one of your parents has to initial your completed goal on your Reading Log.  GOAL SHEETS MUST BE TURNED IN TO THE JERSEYVILLE LIBRARY BY JULY 18, 2017.

Contests & Challenges

Take a picture of your pet--either a real live pet or a stuffed animal.  The picture can be as silly or serious as you want.  Entries MUST BE turned in by July 14!  There will be 5 winners.

Design a T-shirt Contest

Pick up a blank paper t-shirt from the library.  Draw a reading-themed picture (with or without a saying).  Winner's design will be made into real t-shirts that the JPL staff will wear.  Winner will also get a t-shirt to wear.  Entries MUST BE turned in by July 3!!

Reading Challenge #1

Each circle in your reading log represents 15 minutes of reading.  Fill in 5 circles each week and win a small prize.

Reading Challenge #2

Fill in every circle in your reading log and earn 12 tickets for a chance to win bigger prizes--like books or toys!
  1. Every 15 minutes you read, mark off a circle.
  2. When you fill in all your circles, turn in your reading log and receive your tickets. (12 tickets)  Please wait to pick up tickets until Jul14 or after.  Thanks!
  3. Fill in the information on your tickets.
  4. Drop your tickets into the bag next to the prizes you would like to try to win.  Prizes will be set up in the meeting room starting July 20 @ 4:00 p.m.  Tickets must be turned in by 10:00 a.m. on July 21!
  5. You may try to earn more tickets (up to 24) by reading more.  Each hour will earn you 1 more ticket.
  6. A list of prizes will be available by July 14 for those unable to redeem their tickets in person.

Monday, June 19 - Rusty Pliers.  America's favorite Hillbilly magician and ventriloquist!

Monday, June 26 - Mr. Steve.  He will be presenting a show with Music, Magic, Ballooning and more!

Thursday, July 6 - Hamptead Stage Company.  A performance of Beauty and the Beast.

Monday, July 10 - Karen Young.  Will present her Name That Fairy Tale Show!

Monday, July 17 - Juggling Jeff.  Back by popular demand!  This event will be held at the St. Francis School gym on State Street.

Wednesday Arts & Crafts

(Various age appropriate crafts will be featured.)

  • Preschool - Kindergarten @ 10:00 AM
  • Grades 1 - 3 @ 1:00 PM
  • Grades 4 - 5 @ 2:30 PM
June 14 will be picture day for the autograph book.  ALL OTHER WEDNESDAY CRAFT DAYS WILL BE MESSY!  Please dress your children appropriately.  Thank you.

Wreck It Ralph Party--
Make a "sweet kart racer and play a "puzzling" game.

Watch The LEGO Batman Movie and enjoy some snacks.

Egg Drop Project--
Build a cozy nest for your egg, but beware!  We are going to drop it out of the upstairs window!  Will your egg survive?

July 7

How Strong? 
We will be testing the strength of eggs, spaghetti, and paper columns!

July 14

DYO Obstacle Course--
With the help of the Teen SRC, 2 teams will each design their own obstacle course for the opposing team to run through.  Water & a snack will be provided.  **This event will be out at the city park.**

Come and hear a story about Winnie the Mini Horse and meet and pet some of her friends.

**Special Thursday Event -- Comic Book Class**

Jeff Weigel, illustrator and author, is the creator of graphic novel and picture book characters like Atomic Ace, The Sphinx and Dragon Girl.  He is coming to your Jerseyville Library!

WHEN:  Thursday, July 20
TIME:  1:00 - 2:15 p.m.

This activity is open to K- Grade 12 students.  REGISTRATION REQUIRED; call 618.498.9514 to register or for more information.

PRIZE PARTY!!--Friday, July 21 from 6 - 8 PM

Come to the Jerseyville PL.  We'll have an inflatable Slip n' Slide--wear your swimsuit--and a balloon artist.  Enjoy walking tacos and a snow cone; see if you won a prize!  Registration requested for this event by July 19.
