FOIA POLICY

Section A-5.7 Freedom of Information Act

The Jerseyville Public Library will comply with the State of Illinois Freedom of Information Act. (5 ILCS 140/1) (from Ch. 116, par. 201).  When anyone wishes to read or copy any information from the Library’s public papers, a Written Request for Inspection or Copying of Public Records must be filled out (Sample Form attached).

The contact person for information concerning the Library’s public papers or to obtain the above form is the Library Director.  The Director will take all requests whenever the Library is open.  The backup person to contact is the Board Secretary.

The fee for copying material is the currently established fee.  If materials are mailed, the requestor pays the cost of postage.

The Library needs 48 hours advance notice for all materials not kept in the current files.

CHALLENGED MATERIAL POLICY

SECTION B-10 CHALLENGED MATERIAL

Since the library is a tax-supported institution, any citizen has the right to question the inclusion or exclusion of any title in the collection of the library.

Serious questions of materials by any person or group, in an effort to eliminate certain items, must be submitted in writing to the Library Director on a standard form (linked below).  The Director will present it to the Materials, Bylaws, and Policy committee of the Board, who will make a decision.  If the Committee, in consultation with the Library Director, cannot agree on whether or not to withdraw an item, it will be decided by vote of the Board.  A written or verbal reply will be furnished.

No removal or restriction of a questioned item will take place until an examination of the item has been made through proper procedure.

(Update approved at Board of Trustees meeting 03/20/2001)
